On an adjacent site of a modern day Tea House, a Caretaker’s Residence was proposed. This project required the unpacking of what is thought to be a domicile. It asked how does one work and how does one live and where do the two intersect or divide. How is a living and working unit encoded? From there it was important to establish a programmatic list; what is the role of a caretaker to the tea house and what does their life consist of? With a programmatic path narrowed down, a morphology of drawings, models and diagrams ensued. Massing related to the site context while the program relates to the massing - managing the design process from inside and outside simultaneously. Planometric and sectional relationships were key to producing the finalized design; a two bar, scheme featuring private, hosting and work elements while literally and phenomenally conversing with the tea house directly North of this site.
